Castlecliff School Golf

Castlecliff School’s Golf in the Community’ project is a good example of how the KiwiSport Regional Fund works. As part of their “Community Curriculum”, the Castlecliff School principal, Katherine Ellery, formed a partnership with the Castlecliff Golf Club to create awareness of golf for students and their families as a sport option in their community, and to encourage them to engage with their local golf club.
The new and innovative project catered for 5-11 year olds across the whole of the school. The project goals were to introduce the students to the game of golf, give them the opportunity and support to learn about golf, and encourage family members to be involved.
Kiwisport funded golf coach, Tracey Corbett, to go into Castlecliff School and deliver eight one-hour training sessions over a two-week period. The Castlecliff Golf Club provided volunteers to support Tracey at each session, making the adult-student ratio optimal. The “Castlecliff Golf Adjunct” were involved as well, donating $50.00 toward programme costs.
Around 80 children participated in the programme. To begin with very few knew anything about golf, and none had previously received any golf training. All of the students benefited hugely from the basic training which included correct technique and how to hold and swing a club.
The two-week programme culminated in a mini Ambrose tournament which was held at Castlecliff Golf Club. Almost 20 volunteers from the club assisted with the event to ensure each group had at least one adult golfer supporting them in their efforts.
Castlecliff School's strategic plan fitted nicely with KiwiSport objectives, as community engagement is a big part of Castlecliff School’s curriculum, and in this case the golf club was the choice as it is an activity and an organisation that is embedded in their community.
Wanganui Multisport & Triahlon Club - Kayaking
The Wanganui Multisport and Triathlon club began working with Sport Wanganui a number of years ago to create a strategic plan going forwards for their kayaking division. A component of this was a Coach Development Plan and a clear direction to foster the club’s coaches was established. Resources to upskill kayaking coaches were limited, so the Multisport and Triathlon Club, with guidance from Sport Wanganui, applied for Kiwsport funding to put potential coaches through a certified coaching programme.
The Multisport and Triathlon’s application was successful because their coaching plan includes the development of youth coaches, and has a knock-on effect for young athletes involved in the sport.
Five new kayaking coaches are now working towards gaining the Community Coach Level 1 Certificate, through Canoe Racing NZ. Completion of the certificate course involves an online module, a number of hours observing other coaches, and time spent in practical coach delivery. The new coaches are on the water three times a week with the beginner and development squads - a total of about six-eight hours per person per week. They also receive theory instruction in addition to the on-water time, and group management learning.
Complimenting the coaching programme is the purchase of new boats which will cater for the growing numbers of beginner kayakers. The club has been successful in obtaining a grant from the Powerco Wanganui Trust to make this happen.
Working with Sport Wanganui has boosted the club’s sustainability into the future, and the Kiwisport funding has allowed them to expand their coaching capability in a way that they would not have otherwise been able to do.
